KP30 Pics – From the Tony King Archive

Tony is the original guy I bought my KP off when it was a mere red-oxide twinkle in my eye.  This guy has forgotten more about KP30s (and KPs generally) than all of the people I have ever met have ever known.  Happily, we’ve stayed in touch and catch up when we cross paths at the odd show, or when I need to know something; good times!

In another blatant exhibition of legend-ness Tony sent me over all of these pics.  They represent years of internet trawling and right-click save as action.  Sit back, relax and enjoy!  Tonk King, I salute you!

This is amazing.

Project KP30: M3 This – Thermostat Housing

Well, the old housing was well and truly warped beyond ever standing any chance of getting it to seal.  I gave it 4 goes, used sealant, hand flatted it on a machined surface, checked it with engineering blue…I was ready to throw it in the bin.  So I did.  Luckily, I had another 90 degree housing off a later KP and, with a little modification and a new top hose, it fitted pretty well.  I think it looks neater and it takes the load of the rocking engine better too.  I don’t really care about that though…I’m just glad it holds coolant!

They Make Joy. I Make Steam.

BMW spent millions developing the E46 M3.  I threw a slightly bigger, tuned engine into a 34-year-old shopping car.   As a result, when racing said M3 though a series of roundabouts, all my coolant fell out.

Turns out the thermostat housing is warped from, I’m guessing, attempts to weld it, so it blew the gasket at about 7000rpm in 3rd.  It sprayed coolant all over the screen and left a pretty impressive trail of steam behind me; the main point is I only lost a car length on him before slinking off down a side road to boil in shame…so technically I won*

*I did not win.

Project KP30: It’s that time of year again

Yes! As far as I’m concerned, from now on in, it’s officially Spring.  The KP has made it out of the garage and the Roadster hasn’t broken for long enough for me to do some work on it!

As always there’s a list of stuff I want to get done before I put it back on the road and unfortunately, that includes paint.  I hate doing paint.

I had to paint the boot lid after rolling the car back into my engine stand while in the garage (yep, there was A LOT of swearing) and the bonnet had developed a weird reaction/ bubble thing so, out came the gun.

Magically, the paint looks good in this pic…it’s not, so I’ll be flatting it back and giving it another coat.  Did I mention I hate doing paint?

Meanwhile I’ve sent the aluminium thermostat housing out to get welded up as it had started to leak.  When that’s back, it should be ready for another summer on the road.  I pretty much can’t wait to be driving round listening to twin 40s and smelling of petrol!
