07-06-13 – Players Classic x Speedhunters x Goodwood Motor racing circuit

It’s freezing cold now and pretty much dark all the time. Yep, winter. It’s happened again, but 5 months ago (yeah, it’s really been that long) it was 25 degrees and I was in the South.  I got the golden ticket from Bryn over at Speedhunters and, with slightly less than no thinking about it, booked my place.  With some final spannering complete on the car I loaded up for the 500 mile round trip: Goodwood, petrol-head Mecca and sporting venue of the finer gentleman, oh and Players…those guys!

500 miles is a LONG way in a stripped out 105db car, but it was worth it….it was really worth it!  As you’d expect the quality of the cars was second-to-none…the best the UK and probably the-pointy-bit-at-the-top-of-Europe had to offer.

The cherry on the cake: A massive bucket-list tick off in the shape of getting to take in a few laps of the legendary circuit in my KP.  Massive thanks to Captain Players himself Jay who hooked me up with a track briefing to get me out there despite rocking up late!  The circuit was great; really fast with that tricky hair-pin to test your brakes, bravery and give you an excuse to make some noise in front of the crowd.

500 miles. 5 laps of Goodwood and still shiny enough to play with the big boys:  The KP that keeps on giving.  I’ve had a total second honeymoon with this car.

There’s been a lot of shows this summer, but none with quite the same vibe, sense of occasion and all-round style of Players Classic….see you at the next one!

Project KP30: Racer86 x Compomotive – Tailor Made

The splits are gone and the hunt is off.

I’m a big fan of sourcing rare wheels, rebuilding then in your living room and making them work. But this time I wanted box-fresh, spanking new and untouched  Once I’d gotten over that decision the rest was easy with a call to Comopomotive: I wanted these MLs custom made to the exact specification for the KP: from the PCD (finally the correct 110mm for the car) to mm perfect staggered offsets and beautifully locating centre bore.

Like a Savile Row suite they fit perfectly and, in that one-off anthracite grey, give me all the nostalgic race car look I wanted.  It goes without saying they weigh almost nothing and the quality is stunning.  I’m over the moon with them.

The catalyst for these new wheels?  Well, at the end of last summer I passed the car to a highly recommended painter (while I was on holiday – much more fun than sanding and spraying) to re-paint the bonnet for me (after I’d been having some issues doing it myself and ran out of time) and came back to find the whole car had been resprayed….yep.  That happened. With me out of the country they just went ahead and did the whole car!  It’s never looked so good and, as sad as it is to admit, my home job just wasn’t cutting it.  It looks like glass now and really pops.

I’ve been giving the car a thorough once-over ahead of the 2013 show season and hopefully some sunshine use: from changing the manifold gaskets to rebuilding the brakes, it’s only just back on the ground for the first time in weeks!

Pic dump:  I’ve just picked up a 50mm f1.4 and I love it!

TA22 wood grain – says 4. Has 5.

Really need to make up a nice bracket for my TRD CDI module…

K-Love

Now all it needs is driving!

Summer’s Gone (and so has the 924)

Country houses and ’80s GT cars. I had it all.

I’m still not sure if it’s a good or bad thing, but the 924 has changed hands twice since I sold it and it now lives with a guy I work with; I see it EVERY day.

Project 924: The Archive of a Life Less Ordinary

Another busy weekend means still no proper shoot of the 924; I did however stop off for 5 mins at the industrial estate where the KP was shot for Retro Cars Magazine.  Unfortunately James Lipman wasn’t on hand this time, so you’ll have to live with these:

I’ve de-wipered it now too.

When I bought the car it came with all the original books and a huge folder of history.  Inside was every receipt for every bit of work the car has had, every tax disc, concourse entries and all sorts of press clippings from the ’80s to now on the 924.  I love going through this stuff and will be adding to it where I can.

Retro Cars x PVW X Compomotive Wheels

A couple of weeks back I headed over to Compomotive wheels with Si from Retro Cars and Elliot from PVW to shoot a feature.   I don’t usually post these things as they are going in the mag, but I thought I’d flash a bit of B-Roll because the place was AWESOME.  Make sure you check it out in Retro cars and PVW: British engineering alive and well!
