Project E30: Sale Away?

I’ve done it.  I’ve put Concorde up for sale.  Concorde?  Well, yeah, because an E30 in this condition is a borderline one-off; well certainly on my budget anyway.  Why have I done it?  I’m still not sure.  I guess it’s a mixture of the constant worry of running a car this clean and possibly, now I have the Herald for general retro play, I want something a bit more mundane for the daily grind… No, I’m not convinced either and will probably end up with something less suitable if it goes through.

I took some pics to make me feel better though.  This has only helped to talk me out of it.

Please don’t buy my car.

Berg Cup Round 1: 06-08-05-11 – Part #3

Finally: More Berg Pics!

Home-brew Lotus Sunbeam is de-stroked to 2.0l and revs to 10K!

We were chatting to the owner about it and he told us he’s currently building a M5 V10 Powered Ultima GTR!

DTM enough for ya?

Genuine Zakspeed MK2 was built and raced by Zakspeed until ’89 when the current owner bought it; he’s been racing it ever since!

Bosch mechanical injection pump for dyno tuning

And finally, my dream house overlooking the hill.

Berg Cup Round 1: 06-08-05-11 – Part #2

Round two and I’m still on just the pics from the pits on Friday…Enjoy!

This was one of my favorite cars from the whole weekend: Clean GTE

Got Aero?

At the same time as Group H, the NSU trophy was running.  I’m pretty sure I’ve only ever seen one of these cars in the flesh, so to suddenly be in a field with 10s of them was amazing.

Drink?

Berg Cup Round 1: 06-08-05-11 – Part #1

It’s all about the words he said.  But how can I possibly put into words the epicness that was last weekend at the first round of the Berg Cup in Eschdorf: less than 36 hours, 1000 miles, 3 countries (well, 2 and a Principality), time travel, boat travel the best beer in the universe, great pizza, good times and amazing friends.  That sort of scratches the surface for now, but don’t worry there is going to be a lot of coverage…a lot.

It all started at a little after 2am on Thursday night.  The chariot of choice was and E39 BMW 530D Touring which was loaded up and pointed at Dover.

3 hours through the night later we hit the port, boarded up and left the white cliffs for dead.

Spotted: Brits on tour also making their way to Ze Berg.

By 3pm we were checked in, full of food and ready to rock.  What we found next blew us away.

The sleepy countryside village of Eschdorf was littered with racing cars; Literally dumped up kerbs in the street where people were busy spannering away.  It was totally open too and we were able to walk round and soak it all in.

After years of drooling over these cars on the net we could barely contain ourselves on seeing cars like this Polo:

There is a myth on the internet that the competitors are all very secretive about their cars, but nothing was further from the truth; everyone was happy to talk to us, open up the cars, let us shoot them and even sit in a few of them!

Right, enough chat, here’s some more of the first pics:

This guy was my hero: Record holding 750bhp AWD Porsche being set up in the street and the whole time he was wearing a Ralph Lauren Shirt and Brogues. PURE CLASS.

The attention to detail and level of prep on all the cars was amazing, I don’t usually post more than one or two pics of a car, but for this bunch I’m just going to go for it:

Nurbergring special run out of you garage?  If you ever wondered what living the dream looked like, I’m pretty sure this is it:

More soon…

Project E30: Roll on

This car just keeps rolling, seriously, it makes the Roadster look high maintenance.  I put petrol in one end and motorway disappears out of the other.  Amazing.  That was until last Friday when when the exhaust rear box snapped; I was kinda expecting it though as it was a bit rusty when I last poked it at Christmas and replaced the front section.

Now it has a complete new system from the manifold back with an OEM slash-cut tail pipe

Super clean underside…

Despite the stack of paperwork it was about 10k away from needing the cam belt doing, so I thought I’d get in early and make the change

This is the easiest car I have ever worked on…ever.  It has roughly three moving parts.  Swapping out the belt took a couple of hours max!

New belt and tensioners

Good thing I changed it when I did..It looks like, despite having 2 new belts in its life, none of the pulleys and tensioners had ever been changed.  Check out the state of this:

Bullet dodged.

Still, despite all this hard work I’ve left it parked under a cover safe and sound.  I just can’t stop driving the ’68 Herald.  Maybe it’s the weather and all the Bank Holiday but currently there is nowhere I’d rather be than cruising around in it: 9 days on the road and over 600 miles covered!

Project E30: RSVP Rollers

Self indulgent I know, but here’s a few rollers of the E30 shot by my wing-man Rog.

Thanks to Rog for coming out to play and Rach for manning the camera car (and the subsequent steak dinner!).  I really can’t wait to get out over summer and play cameras more!
