TAS 2009

Well this blog has been running for a year now and one of my first posts was TAS ’08! The car of the show for me then was the Rocky Auto KPGC10 and, reassuringly,  my car of 2009 is another Retro car. With all the classic touches that make Japanese cars so right; Stance, fitment and clean simple bodywork this AE70 from the G-Works stand was killin’ it!

Perfect paint and Wats in 14×9″ front and 14×9.5″  rear, running 195/45s all round filling out  those perfectly rolled arches.

I could look at these pics for days!

For the best TAS coverage on the net check out Speedhunters. Props to Mike Garrett for the awesome pics too!

P.S. Mike, if you read this it’s good to see you posting again on Auto Otaku!

Project Roadster; Clutch Time Vol.5

Last few bits, honest, then I will post something interesting!

Filled up the Extension housing

The filled up the box.  After spending the best part of 4 days lying on my back under it I thought I would take advantage some pipe and funnel I had knocking about.

It gave me chance to finish off some other little jobs (gearbox oil does not flow quickly at 0 degrees!).

Wheels on:

Jack up, stands out, jack down. Took it for a road test and all was good (relief!). It is so good to have it back on the road and it’s only been a few days!

Generic roadster driving pic:

If any Roadster owners have read this and been put off swapping out their clutch themselves, don’t be! The two things that gave me the most trouble were the weather, it became an endurance test due to the cold, so wait until Summer (do you remember Summer?) and secondly, not having the car high enough; Sweet talk a friend in to letting you use a two-post ramp or at least get some good jacks and stands!

Project Roadster; Clutch Time Vol.4

Good news, the clutch kit the arrived yesterday, so today I pulled the old clutch off and got to work.

Compared to the new clutch you can see how hammered the old one was! The pressure plate was in a worse state but I did’t get any pics of that.

I fitted up the new plate and clutch. This pic was taken with the camera on my chest; not a huge amount of room to work, especially when trying to swing a torque wrench!

The box went on pretty easy and it only took me about 3 hours to get the car 95% finished.  As I turned the exhaust over to get it out of the garage, I noticed the mid silencer had rubbed through from being hit on stuff. Out came the welder (which also needed fixing) and I tacked it up. The car really needs a new exhaust, but for now I will be happy enough to get it back on the road!

The other pain was repairing the exhaust down-pipe bracket:

My first attempt stripped the captive bolt on the back !

Alls that is left to do now if fill up the gear box and put the console back in! Can’t wait to have it back on the road!

Project Roadster; Clutch Time Vol.3

What a mission! Today I tackled the last starter bolt (arrowed below; this pic was taken with the camera shoved up the tunnel). After 3 hours of fighting I gave up…

and drilled it out. You can see why I couldn’t get it off; it was well rounded!

I have spent about 5 hours just on that one bolt; seriously, not fun! Once it was off it was a case of dropping the last bell-housing bolts and dropping the ‘box off.

Only problem is because the car is so low, (despite my best efforts to get is a high as I could) the gearbox won’t come out from below the car; there is just not enough space front, back or past the sills! So, it’s going to have to stay under the car until it goes back on and I will have to change the thrust bearing under the car!

Last shot of the old clutch

Hopefully I get sent the right clutch and I can be back on the road next weekend (work sucks and gets in the way of everything!).

G-yesS 400

Stance skool.

OK, so we all know air bags are for cheats, but this looks sick.
