07-06-13 – Players Classic x Speedhunters x Goodwood Motor racing circuit

It’s freezing cold now and pretty much dark all the time. Yep, winter. It’s happened again, but 5 months ago (yeah, it’s really been that long) it was 25 degrees and I was in the South.  I got the golden ticket from Bryn over at Speedhunters and, with slightly less than no thinking about it, booked my place.  With some final spannering complete on the car I loaded up for the 500 mile round trip: Goodwood, petrol-head Mecca and sporting venue of the finer gentleman, oh and Players…those guys!

500 miles is a LONG way in a stripped out 105db car, but it was worth it….it was really worth it!  As you’d expect the quality of the cars was second-to-none…the best the UK and probably the-pointy-bit-at-the-top-of-Europe had to offer.

The cherry on the cake: A massive bucket-list tick off in the shape of getting to take in a few laps of the legendary circuit in my KP.  Massive thanks to Captain Players himself Jay who hooked me up with a track briefing to get me out there despite rocking up late!  The circuit was great; really fast with that tricky hair-pin to test your brakes, bravery and give you an excuse to make some noise in front of the crowd.

500 miles. 5 laps of Goodwood and still shiny enough to play with the big boys:  The KP that keeps on giving.  I’ve had a total second honeymoon with this car.

There’s been a lot of shows this summer, but none with quite the same vibe, sense of occasion and all-round style of Players Classic….see you at the next one!

Summer Daze: The 8 Week Blur

Testing, testing…is this thing still on?

The last 8 weeks have been manic.  Good manic.  Show season is in full effect and I’ve barely spent a weekend at home.  when I have been back at HQ I’ve been spannering on a new project that’s gotten massively out of hand.  More on that in a bit.   Here’s a taster of some of the action:

Castle Retro Show

The annual pilgrimage to South Wales went off without a hitch and even the sun shone.  I rocked down with the usual suspects in the Herald  for the full 3 days and it was EPIC.  From a Mobile cinema to blazing infernos, we glamped the place to death.

Northern Classic Show

A random show in the North near Manchester: Indoor is the key here, it is England after all.  As a rest from the usual scene suspects it was refreshing: Flat caps and beards more the order of the day, but a chilled vibe and diverse mix made it well worth the trip.  The ’90s spec hotel I stayed in didn’t, but we’ll gloss over that.

Early Edition

Like normal Edition, but earlier.  A random spot of Mercedes love by the organisers saw me roll into the show and shine in the Benz totally unprepared!  Luckily the legends at Meguires sorted me out and the daily got lime light for one night only. The only Mercedes in the village: Hell YES.

Retro Mania

Retro Mania smashed it this year and finally got the weather it deserved to make a good go of it.  The mix of Dubs and Old Skool was great, filling the place all day Saturday and Sunday.

Players Classic x Speedhunters

Oh yeah, a couple of wees ago there was this show you might of heard about…what was it again, erm: PLAYERS CLASSIC.  You know I love a bit of Goodwood, so when Speedhunters gave me the opportunity to have the KP there with them I jumped at the chance.  522 miles in 35 hours saw me take in the historic circuit, race around it (and ticked a big one off the bucket list) and mix it up with some great people.  The whole thing was amazing; expect a BIG update on this when I get my act together!

And that project I mentioned…

Well, I bought a ’64 MINI as a quick 3-day turn-around job and a bit of fun. 7 weeks.  SEVEN weeks it’s taken to get it finished.  It’s been worth it though and as I sit here now it’s covered 600 miles and it getting the final touches this weekend.  Once it’s all done I’ll get it shot and fill you in…it’s a MINI, but it’s a bit special….

Project KP30: Racer86 x Compomotive – Tailor Made

The splits are gone and the hunt is off.

I’m a big fan of sourcing rare wheels, rebuilding then in your living room and making them work. But this time I wanted box-fresh, spanking new and untouched  Once I’d gotten over that decision the rest was easy with a call to Comopomotive: I wanted these MLs custom made to the exact specification for the KP: from the PCD (finally the correct 110mm for the car) to mm perfect staggered offsets and beautifully locating centre bore.

Like a Savile Row suite they fit perfectly and, in that one-off anthracite grey, give me all the nostalgic race car look I wanted.  It goes without saying they weigh almost nothing and the quality is stunning.  I’m over the moon with them.

The catalyst for these new wheels?  Well, at the end of last summer I passed the car to a highly recommended painter (while I was on holiday – much more fun than sanding and spraying) to re-paint the bonnet for me (after I’d been having some issues doing it myself and ran out of time) and came back to find the whole car had been resprayed….yep.  That happened. With me out of the country they just went ahead and did the whole car!  It’s never looked so good and, as sad as it is to admit, my home job just wasn’t cutting it.  It looks like glass now and really pops.

I’ve been giving the car a thorough once-over ahead of the 2013 show season and hopefully some sunshine use: from changing the manifold gaskets to rebuilding the brakes, it’s only just back on the ground for the first time in weeks!

Pic dump:  I’ve just picked up a 50mm f1.4 and I love it!

TA22 wood grain – says 4. Has 5.

Really need to make up a nice bracket for my TRD CDI module…

K-Love

Now all it needs is driving!

Project KP30:One Last Blast

before winter…

See you in Spring…

The KP survives another year and is safely tucked up at my Folk’s house for the winter.   Not exactly sure where this summer has gone, but another tax disk has expired and a I feel like I never really got out in the old girl much.  I’ve got a few ideas for stuff to do over winter but for now the Herald is coming up to mine for some (outlaw) work over the next few months. 2013: Less rain please!

Project KP30: No More White Rap

The KP has finally dried out from the Speedhunters excursion so I figured I should catch up with some of the work it needs.  Firstly, the manifold was cracked so I welded it up and smoothed out all the joins.  I decided to run without the wrap this time; it looks like crap and inevitably changes colour and unwraps itself.  So, at the risk of higher underbonnet temps in traffic or something, I high-temp painted the steel bananas and re-fited them.

On the basis that it took me 3 weeks to get round to this I might get the other bits done by Christmas…ahh, I need more time to play!

Project KP30: Speedhunters Shoot – Behind The Scenes

You may have heard of a little website that goes by the name of Speedhunters? Well, I’ve been showing my support by having them in my blog roll for a while now and a couple of weeks back I got a call from Bryn (Musselwhite – Speedhunter’s newest features man and my long-term media crush) saying they wanted to feature the KP: AWESOME.

After we cancelled once due to the rain, there was only one other date we could do it…and guess what?  It was raining, though just the term “raining” doesn’t really do justice to what felt like all the water in the world being thrown at a quiet corner of the Cotswolds where the shoot was taking place.   The KP has only be wet about 4 or 5 times in 7 years, so I held back the tears and went for it.  Luckily when I arrived there was the full Speedhunters service:  Car wash and coffee.

Despite the freezing deluge it was an awesome day and, as always, a laugh with Bryn.  Here’s a few “behind the scenes” pics.  Bryn’s barns hold a number of cool cars, parts and memorabilia – worth a SH feature on their own!

Thanks again to Bryn and Speedhunters!  Check out the full feature here:
