Project KP30: Racer86 x Compomotive – Tailor Made

The splits are gone and the hunt is off.

I’m a big fan of sourcing rare wheels, rebuilding then in your living room and making them work. But this time I wanted box-fresh, spanking new and untouched  Once I’d gotten over that decision the rest was easy with a call to Comopomotive: I wanted these MLs custom made to the exact specification for the KP: from the PCD (finally the correct 110mm for the car) to mm perfect staggered offsets and beautifully locating centre bore.

Like a Savile Row suite they fit perfectly and, in that one-off anthracite grey, give me all the nostalgic race car look I wanted.  It goes without saying they weigh almost nothing and the quality is stunning.  I’m over the moon with them.

The catalyst for these new wheels?  Well, at the end of last summer I passed the car to a highly recommended painter (while I was on holiday – much more fun than sanding and spraying) to re-paint the bonnet for me (after I’d been having some issues doing it myself and ran out of time) and came back to find the whole car had been resprayed….yep.  That happened. With me out of the country they just went ahead and did the whole car!  It’s never looked so good and, as sad as it is to admit, my home job just wasn’t cutting it.  It looks like glass now and really pops.

I’ve been giving the car a thorough once-over ahead of the 2013 show season and hopefully some sunshine use: from changing the manifold gaskets to rebuilding the brakes, it’s only just back on the ground for the first time in weeks!

Pic dump:  I’ve just picked up a 50mm f1.4 and I love it!

TA22 wood grain – says 4. Has 5.

Really need to make up a nice bracket for my TRD CDI module…

Now all it needs is driving!

Project KP30:One Last Blast

before winter…

See you in Spring…

The KP survives another year and is safely tucked up at my Folk’s house for the winter.   Not exactly sure where this summer has gone, but another tax disk has expired and a I feel like I never really got out in the old girl much.  I’ve got a few ideas for stuff to do over winter but for now the Herald is coming up to mine for some (outlaw) work over the next few months. 2013: Less rain please!

Project KP30: No More White Rap

The KP has finally dried out from the Speedhunters excursion so I figured I should catch up with some of the work it needs.  Firstly, the manifold was cracked so I welded it up and smoothed out all the joins.  I decided to run without the wrap this time; it looks like crap and inevitably changes colour and unwraps itself.  So, at the risk of higher underbonnet temps in traffic or something, I high-temp painted the steel bananas and re-fited them.

On the basis that it took me 3 weeks to get round to this I might get the other bits done by Christmas…ahh, I need more time to play!

Project KP30: Tracking Changes

So, I may have been putting this off a little.  At the end of last summer I made some sus changes and, because it was going away, only did a quick eye-lignment.  Turns out I don’t wear glasses for nothing; it was pulling all over the road.  With a day off work today I started my “jobs to do on the KP list 2011″ with some wheel alignment.

Stands – check, string – check.

Wedged the wheel (technical I know…):

So a first measure was pretty conclusive on the pulling:  Driver’s front 3mm toe in…Passenger side front 11.5mm toe in.

I set it up to have zero toe.  My thinking is that compliance in the bushes will give me a little toe out whilst driving; it’s not a top speed car so a little more turn-in is a welcome trade.   It all sounds good in principle, but I’ve not driven it yet; It’s up in the air on stands now for some engine work. Roll on summer!

Daily Driven (Roadster: Sold)

Soooo, I sold the Roadster by accident and now my only car is the KP.

By accident?  Yeah, I’ve been toying with it for a while, but I’ve never found anything else that’s got me excited enough to want replace it with.  I was kinda getting on my own nerves talking about it, so just put it up for sale to see what happened…and it kinda sold in 48 hours.  So now I’m on the hunt for a new daily driver (any suggestions hit me up in the comments/ on Facebook).  Until then the KP will be on the daily grind!

Rotary Mustard: 13B KP30

This is going to be awesome when it’s finished!

P.S. This is the colour my KP was originally!
